Abstract:

Project scheduling is the part of project management that deals with determining when intime to start (and finish) which activities and with the allocation of scarce resources to theproject activities. In practice, virtually all project managers are confronted with resourcescarceness. In such cases, the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP)arises. This optimization problem has become popular over the last few decades because ofits practical relevance to various industrial and research fields. Numerous procedures havebeen developed in the literature for finding either optimal or heuristic solutions for theRCPSP.Resource constrained project scheduling problem under stochastic circumstances have beenconsidered in recent decades where uncertainty is modeled by means of activities’ duration. In this research we study an extension of basic stochastic RCPSP in which availability ofresources is not predefined. Activities follow preempt-resume mode in case of any disruptiondue to resource infeasibility. A solution for this variant of RCPSP is defined in three steps byutilizing heuristic procedures for creating initial schedule, adding time and resource buffers inorder to yield proactive schedule and applying reactive policies to encounter with unhandledbreakdowns. Computational experiments depict that proposed combined procedure achievesignificant performance gains over the use of each method separately.

Proactive and reactive strategies for resource-constrained project scheduling with uncertain resource availabilities

Research concerning project planning under uncertainty has primarily focused on the stochastic resource-constrained project scheduling problem (stochastic RCPSP), an extension of the basic RCPSP, in which the assumption of deterministic activity durations is dropped. In this paper, we introduce a new variant of the RCPSP for which the uncertainty is modeled by means of resource availabilities t...

Exact and suboptimal reactive strategies for resource-constrained project scheduling with uncertain resource availabilities

In order to cope with the uncertainty inherent in practical project management, proactive and/or reactive strategies can be used. Proactive strategies try to anticipate future disruptions by incorporating slack time or excess resource availability into the schedule, whereas reactive strategies react after a disruption happened and try to revert to a feasible schedule. Traditionally, reactive ap...

A UNIFIED MODEL FOR RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED PROJECT SCHEDULING PROBLEM WITH UNCERTAIN ACTIVITY DURATIONS

In this paper we present a unified (probabilistic/possibilistic) model for resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with uncertain activity durations and a concept of a heuristic approach connected to the theoretical model. It is shown that the uncertainty management can be built into any heuristic algorithm developed to solve RCPSP with deterministic activity durations. The esse...

A THEORETICALLY CORRECT RESOURCE USAGE VISUALIZATION FOR THE RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED PROJECT SCHEDULING PROBLEM

The cumulative resource constraints of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) do not treat the resource demands as geometric rectangles, that is, activities are not necessarily assigned to the same resource units over their processing times. In spite of this fact, most papers on resource-constrained project scheduling mainly in the motivation phase use a strip packing of re...

The Combinatorial Multi-Mode Resource Constrained Multi-Project Scheduling Problem

This paper presents the formulation and solution of the Combinatorial Multi-Mode Resource Constrained Multi-Project Scheduling Problem. The focus of the proposed method is not on finding a single optimal solution, instead on presenting multiple feasible solutions, with cost and duration information to the project manager. The motivation for developing such an approach is due in part to practica...

An Optimization via Simulation approach for the preemptive and non-preemptive multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problems

In this paper a novel modelling and solving method has been developed to address the so-called resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) where project tasks have multiple modes and also the preemption of activities are allowed. To solve this NP-hard problem, a new general optimization via simulation (OvS) approach has been developed which is the main contribution of the current re...
